CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Shintarou Midorima (Kuroko's Basketball) and Emerald Sustrai (RWBY).

CHARACTER
NAME: Riou Mason Busujima
CANON: Hypnosis Mic
CANON POINT: Post-loss to Matenrou
AGE: 28.
BACKGROUND: Quickie run-down since the Wiki doesn’t really have one on it:
Riou was born of an American father and a Japanese mother. He spent time overseas and eventually joined the Navy, raising to the rank of Sergeant First-Class* before the military was abolished by the women of The Party of Words, the central governing body that essentially managed to overthrow the world’s weapons with the Hypnosis Microphones.

From then on, all manner of warfare was replaced by Hypnosis Microphones, a specialized instrument that utilizes words and amplifies them to disturb sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Riou was given a prototype during his time in the military before all militaries were abolished that has a stronger ability to affect the nervous systems than regular model Hypnosis Mics. With the Hypnosis Mics in place, Japan was divided into territories and men with Hypnosis Microphones were to decide amongst themselves who was in charge via territory rap battles, underneath the Party of Words.

After the military was eliminated, Riou settled down in a forest near the harbor in Yokohama and set up a campsite for himself to live out his days until the military was restored. During one of Jyuto’s cases as a policeman, he encountered Riou and introduced him to Samatoki. The two gained a mutual respect through battle against robbers who attempted to steal Riou’s prototype Hypnosis Microphone and he agreed to join Samatoki and Jyuto’s team, Mad Trigger Crew (MTC) under the MC name “Crazy M.”

Riou quickly bonded with the other members of Yokohama’s MTC and considered them brothers-in-arms by the time the territory battles came up. The fierce battle between Ikebukuro’s Buster Bros ended with a victory for Mad Trigger Crew, followed by a loss against Matenrou. With their territory lost, the next step is to become stronger and take it back.

*Military Translation Note: Japan does not officially have a navy post-WWII due to constitutional restrictions on weaponry, but circumvents this by having a “Maritime Self-Defense Force.” However, colloquially it is still is referred to as Navy by many and this is the term the writers chose to use in the Hypnosis Mic series. This seemingly conflicts with a ranking of Sergeant First Class as most military do not have Sergeant as a naval ranking. This is because military rankings in Japan are not differentiated the same way as they are in English, instead a number of rankings being lumped together. “Gunsou” is the term used in Japanese for his ranking, which roughly refers to the general ranking equivalent of Sergeant First Class. Typically, the Maritime ranking equivalent is “Kaisou” but HypMic chose to use “Gunsou” instead despite specifying his status as a Navy veteran. Therefore even though this ranking doesn’t exist in reality, in the canon Riou is a Navy Sergeant First-Class.

PERSONALITY:
Riou is a Japanese Navy veteran and proud despite that Japan’s military was abolished by the Party of Words. This seeps into his personality. He wears military fatigues, he carries a replica rifle despite the elimination of weapons, and it oozes in his speech. His preferred pronoun in Japanese is “shoukan,” which translates roughly to “I, a military man” to connote that he is and always will be a member of the military. This is important because it falls in line with Riou’s attitude that the military will be re-established at some point, his faith going so far as to prevent him from seeking additional employment and living essentially at a campsite in a forest in Yokohama. He doesn’t adhere to societal norms and he doesn’t seem to recognize any of his behaviors as abnormal, despite his chosen MC name being “Crazy M.”

Riou has a debatably healthy paranoia when it comes to protecting his campsite. He goes overboard creating traps and mercilessly disposes of invaders. His Hypnosis Mic is a military prototype that is more valuable and attracts would-be thieves to his doorstep frequently, making the preparations he makes not entirely unfounded. To the outsider this can appear remarkably fringe because he rigs his property with rope traps, cameras, a PA system to speak to intruders over.

Riou’s behavior is often tactical and based in the belief that he should be sharp and ready for anything for the moment the military is back. He can be single-minded in this sense and often exhibits other militaristic behaviors, such as following the orders of whoever he sees as a commanding officer (often Jyuto in MTC though Samatoki is the leader of the division; he will take care to hold Samatoki back). His official profile states that if a superior told him that white was black, then white was black. He also has a very military-mindset of accepting your squad as the people who have your back no matter what. Outside of orders, once Riou sets his mind to something, that’s essentially it unless there's something else he can't ignore. For example: when Samatoki and Riou met, Samatoki's aggressive behavior resulted in a brief rap battle despite Jyuto's objections and attempted explanation. It's only stopped by robbers interrupting and it's likely Riou would've fought until one of them was unconscious. He’s the type of person who embodies military values like persistence and grit.

His single-mindedness can also be described as "airheadedness" at times. His common sense largely boils down most problems to being solvable by a good meal, and he seems blissfully unaware that there's anything wrong with his cooking. He's also the type to try to send off others and fight on his own if he believes it’s his problem alone, though he'll show loyalty and gratitude toward those who don't regardless of him giving him the out. Those who stand by him are allies for life, just as those who stand against are enemies he will give no quarter to.

His allies get no quarter when it comes to his cooking though. His kitchen skills are second to none and his food is technically good. Riou is happy when he’s able to cook and speak about cooking, taking on a warmer tone as he believes he’s able to show his appreciation when he cooks. It’s unfortunate for those he considers friends who may want to protect those warm feelings as he is blissfully unaware of what appropriate ingredients are. Spider eggs, pond scum, bats and rats... all these sound reasonable to him. He’ll familiarize himself with an area, taste-test ingredients and try to provide a positive culinary experience for himself and others, going to ridiculous lengths to obtain ingredients himself instead of from stores. “Survival cooking” is what he refers to it as, meaning he will hunt and gather all ingredients, whether that means staking out an area, sneaking onto private property, scaling walls, and so on. He doesn't have a sense of what’s normal even outside of his cooking, often talking about things that some may consider disturbing (like war/battle) without any recognition of it being out of place. This goes hand-in-hand with his sense of an occasionally blunt honesty- he doesn’t do white lies or hold back with others, simply stating what he thinks.

Riou’s attitude varies greatly depending on the circumstance he’s in. Normally, he speaks simply but politely, firmly and concisely without faltering. He’s considerably calmer when things are peaceful, but the second he believes himself to be in a combative circumstance he changes. He’s merciless and incredibly intense in battle. His voice is firm, strict, and takes on a tone of intimidation rather intentionally. He is capable of reading the room and differentiating when it is appropriate or when he should make an attempt at de-escalation, but once he decides to go into his battle temperament, that’s it. He has no problem using his considerable strength to his advantage, though his battle style focuses on the Hypnosis Mic over physical violence as words are the choice weapon in his world’s version of Japan.

His rap style focuses on shorter lyrics with an emphasis on violence, with intentional escalation and anticipated reactions (if the person he’s battling with uses a knife in their lyrics, he’ll escalate to a gun and say they’ll be whimpering and crying on the floor). He shows no mercy to enemies, and occasionally throws in nature-related comments (“your head is in a flower garden,” reference to Bald Mountain- which is either a Fantasia reference or to one of the actual mountains, etc.) as well as word play relating to food. Intimidation is key when he raps, repeating themes of telling people to run away from him, go home, sleep, and so on both show his honorable soldier side as giving them a chance to escape harm first and to intimidate.

Overall, Riou is an intimidating military man through-and-through with some intense cooking quirks and a good heart.

POWERS/ABILITIES: No supernatural powers! As for abilities, he has his military training (good strength/agility/stealth, but not inhuman), survivalist skills (including trap construction), cooking skills, and a strong ability to rap.

Apartment Details:
Riou's apartment is very sparse and clean. In the military, he never needed many things and was given a limited inventory so he's gotten used to that lifestyle. There are a number of traps hidden throughout the apartment, primarily focused at guarding his home at the entrances and windows, but nothing that can be triggered in the bottom foot and a half or so of the apartment so that his dogs are safe at all times. Nothing is particularly decorated, but everything is very clean and organized.

Living Room:
In the living room, there is a couch and a coffee table, and two dog beds with some dog toys in the corner of the room. There's a rug in front of the door both to conceal a trap that shoots up if the door is opened from the outside without a key. (If opened normally, it's good for not tracking dirt in.) It's rather like this, only the teal chair is dog beds.

Bathroom:
Like the rest of his living space, his bathroom is very sparse. Similar to this room, it's a single-room bathroom. He does have a space heater in it, because he doesn't like the cold. Even though the apartments are all well-regulated, in the mornings he finds it helps him wake up when he gets out of the shower.

Bedroom:
Rather oddly, Riou prefers the outdoor life. However, since Itaru came to move in with him he has made various adjustments in order to make room for the other man. His tent and emergency survival supplies still fill the closet with things like canned water, air-compressed granola and other emergency dried foods, a first aid kit, and so on. He still sleeps on the floor in his sleeping bag, but has crafted a specialized
bunk
for Itaru-- a bed on top, and beneath that, a covered gamer station with windows for ventilation. They are raisable, but in case Riou wants to sleep while Itaru is still up, they can go down so the light from the games doesn't bother him. Also in the room is a large dresser, a small table and chair in the corner, a storage chest, a lantern, a small waste basket next to Itaru's bed, and an alarm clock-- though he always inevitable wakes up at the same time with or without it. The lantern is only used for emergencies though-- the bedroom has clap on/clap off lights. He no longer has dog beds in the room, since they find their way to sleep alongside his sleeping bed anyway now that they're no longer separated.

Kitchen:
Riou's kitchen is perhaps the most lively area of his living space. There are all manners of kitchen tools and devices held within, pots and pans hung from the walls, and lots of counter space. He also made a point of making sure that he has two large food prep sinks, making it look a little more on the industry-standard side than home-standard side. If he has to live in an apartment, then he's taking advantage of the space to expand his cooking capabilities. Instead of a table, he has a bar window set-up separating the kitchen from the living space. There are two chairs set up on the side opposite the kitchen, but he has more in the closet if guests come over. (Up to 4.)

Patio:
The patio is a little crowded, since it houses both the smoker than Sen and Samatoki got him for his birthday back in July and his own grill barbecue. There is also an outdoor folding chair set up for if he wants to sit outside. On the wall, there are grill brushes and tools hung, as well as a pair of binoculars for bird watching.

"Guest Room":
There is a guest room, but he turned it into a meat hanging cooler. The door is metal. While it isn't locked, you probably don't want to go in there.
